The Santa Cruz area has a lot of sentimental value to me. I grew up spending holidays there in a house with my extended family. It has always held a special place in my heart, and it continues to be special.
Last summer, I saw an animated poster (beautiful but extremely overpriced), so I figured I could make it myself. I had started this project, but didn't have enough time to make more than one poster. I thought this would be a cool passion project to pick back up. I started with my favorite place where I go to watch surfers, go for runs, and eat lunch.
I have used Adobe Illustrator in a previous art class to generate a similar image of an object using the item trace. In my pieces, I tried to avoid using it, but for example, in the lighthouse image, I used the item trace for the details in the sky, ocean, and rocks because of their complexity and detail, and to expand my knowledge of the tool. I place a texture layover on top of the image after I am done illustrating to make the image not look as flat.
If I were to turn these designs into products, I would make posters, magnets, and stickers.
